Registration

Throughout the year there are numerous marathon canoe and kayak races around the country. These are cater for all ages and abilities; are really good fun; and can be as challenging as you would like to make it.

The next marathon race near to Shrewsbury is on the River Severn at Worcester on Sunday 8 May 2022, run by Worcester Canoe Club.

There are nine divisions, with beginners starting in Division 9 and working their way up by finishing near the front of their race. The race distance increases in the higher divisions and will also include portages where you get out of your boat; carry it along the bank; and get in again (often around a lock or weir but sometimes just a long the bank for the fun of it!)

At Worcester the races are:

  • Divisions 7, 8 and 9: 4 miles, 1 turn
  • Divisions  4, 5 and 6: 8 miles , 1 portage, 4 turns
  • Divisions 1, 2 and 3: 12 miles, 2 portages, 6 turns

Entries are £10 for seniors, £8 for juniors. Competitors need to be British Canoeing On the Water members, juniors can use Shrewsbury Canoe Club membership. More details and entries here.

The kit you will need is: racing K1 or ocean ski; paddle; number board. All paddlers in Divisions 7, 8 and 9, plus all juniors are required to wear an approved buoyancy aid. All equipment is available from Shrewsbury Canoe Club, the usual hire fee will apply https://shrewsburycanoeclub.org/page-18121.
