Tuesday evenings for summer polo (2010)

From Tuesday 13 April 2010, and for the rest of the summer, we will be playing polo 8-9pm in the Priory pool, Shrewsbury Leisure Centre.

All competent paddlers welcome. If you haven’t played polo before, competent means you should be happy paddling forwards & backwards in a pool, doing sweep-stroke turns, and removing your spray-deck underwater. But we promise to try not to push you in if you can’t roll :-)

We can provide all the specialist kit in a range of sizes. You should bring normal swimming kit, and preferably, a short-sleeve t-shirt or rash vest, as well as paddling booties or similar. See you down there bright & early (7:30pm) if you’d like a quick overview of polo. Standard fees are £6 per session for big people and £3 for under-14′s.

We can also arrange for group introduction sessions if a number of you wish to start at the same time. We have already done formal introduction sessions for both Meole Brace Scouts and Shropshire Paddlesport. Other groups are welcome to contact us on mailto:polo[at]shrewsburycanoeclub.org

Regards,
Dylan

New Year – New Night ! Polo night is now… Monday evenings.

From January 2010, and for the rest of the winter, we will be playing on Monday evenings 8-9pm in the Priory pool, Shrewsbury Leisure Centre.

All welcome.

From April through September the sessions will switch to Tuesdays at the same time. This will allow people to do Monday Frankwell river sessions as well as polo. After a long negotiation with the pool managment they have confirmed that this winter/summer cycle should continue for as long as we wish.

See you down there bright & early (~7:30pm) from Monday 4 January.

Shropshire this year – next year Strasbourg!

What wife+child saw on the French exchange last May – and in our colours too – or at least what we ordered instead of the blue, white & green that was delivered.

[Can't upload the picture but here's a link]

Though we’ll have to get a lot better to play either Normandy or Paris, and we may have difficulty playing in the French National league. What’s the French for “Aww Ref!”?

Thursday^w Monday nights are polo nights

*** Note this has now been moved to Mondays for the rest of the winter ***

We have now got a regular winter session booked 8-9pm in the Priory pool down at the Quarry leisure centre in Shrewsbury. This will start from 8 Oct 2009 with a demonstration event for anyone interested in the sport. (Note: This has been changed from the 1 Oct due to a mis-communication with the pool)

Welsh Open 2009

On the weekend of the 1st-2nd August, Shrewsbury Canoe Club competed at the 14th Welsh Open International Canoe Polo Tournament. The event, organised by Bridgend Canoe Club, was held in the Graving Docks, Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay. Teams from across the UK and Ireland competed in two open divisions with Shrewsbury competing in Division 2. Both divisions were divided into groups of 4 teams who played each other with the top 2 teams qualifying for play-offs. Cross-over matches then determined final positions within the division. Games were 8 minutes a side with 1 minute for half time. As a newly formed team, this was Shrewsburys first competitive event on a full sized pitch and outside of the comfort of a heated swimming pool!

On a chilly Saturday morning, Shrewsbury got off to an impressive start drawing their first match against Avon Ladies 1:1. The team played brilliantly against Cardiff B with goals from Mark and Phil beating them 2:1. During the afternoon the team came up against tough competition from FOA B.

Shrewsbury were winning at the beginning of the 2nd half after 3 cracking goals from Dan, Chris and Matt. After a close game, a last minute goal from FOA B drew the game at 3 all. The team played well in a challenging match against Ogmore Wanderers with Phil scoring in the first half to take the score to 3:1. Shrewsbury changed their defence tactics and managed to stop any more goals from Ogmore, losing 3:1 at full time. The team faced FOA B again in the last match of the day, who won the game 2:1 placing Shrewsbury 3rd in its group.

Shrewsbury were greeted by sunny skies in the bay on Sunday however faced their toughest games which would decide their overall position within the division. The team played an impressive game against Ninja Marmots. Shrewsburys defence was strong throughout the 1st half with many difficult saves by Phil. The team really upped their game in the second half, breaking into the oppositions defence which allowed a superb goal from Dan. Despite numerous attacks by Shrewsbury, the Marmots scored a winning goal in the last few minutes with the final score 2:1.

vs Ninja Marmots

Shrewsburys final match against Nomad C was undoubtedly their most demanding. The team held a solid defence in the first half but were finding the game tough going due to the skill and experience of the opposition and were finally beaten 4:0.

Overall the team played very well together, finishing a respectable 16th out of 24 in Division 2. The weekend was a great success, largely thanks to Bridgend Canoe Club who we are grateful to as organisers. The team have now returned to training in preparation to enter National League, Division 4.
