Canoe Polo @ Oswestry's non-olympic games

On a rare sunny morning on Saturday 14 July Shropshire Paddlesport hosted an inter-club canoe polo competition under the banner of the 2012 .

The took place at SPS”s newly refurbished club house beside the Montgomery Canal, opposite the Queen”s Head pub. They provided polo-legal equipment, refreshments, changing rooms with hot showers, a nice flat canal & Oswestry Games medals for the competitors.

Gari Sumner, the organiser, split the entrants into 4 teams of five or six players (one junior team & the ladies getting a spare player to sub on as needed) and ran the event as a mini-league of six games with play-offs to split 1st from 2nd & 3rd from 4th places.

Shrewsbury Canoe Club contributed players to three teams, including half the ladies squad, & a referee.
Will Bevan, SPS, was the second referee and Alison & Pauline ran the scoring desk & helped Gari with the game timing.

Here”s a few piccies of the event:

The whimsically titled teams were:
“Winter is Coming”
“The Hobbits”
“Anonymous”
“Montgomery Manics”

And while we await official validation of the score lines, here”s the results of the competition to see how many canoeists can fit on a pedestal:
